Gynecomastia in Singapore Is Prevailing In Older Men, Especially Those Taking Prescription Medications

December 02, 2021

Dr Ivan Puah is seeing an increase in older patients in the treatment of gynecomastia in Singapore. Men above 40 years old who are on prescription medications are more susceptible to experiencing enlarged male breasts. Statin, amoxicillin, and proton pump inhibitors have proven to increase gynecomastia risk.

Gynecomastia in Singapore Is Prevailing In Older Men, Especially Those Taking Prescription Medications

Dr Ivan Puah, the medical director of Amaris B. Clinic, who has been performing gynecomastia since 2005 and accredited by the Ministry of Singapore to perform surgical body sculpting treatments such as liposuction, is seeing an uprise in older male patients in the treatment of gynecomastia surgery.

Gynecomastia is the presence of an enlargement or excess of the glandular component of the breast. A hormone imbalance primarily causes this medical condition. Taking certain medications on a long term basis for the treatment of other medical conditions may lead to the development of gynecomastia.

Statin, Amoxicillin, And Proton Pump Inhibitors Increase Gynecomastia Risk

Medications for high cholesterol (statin), bacterial infections (amoxicillin) and gastrointestinal diseases (proton pump inhibitors) are at higher risk of developing gynecomastia.

Case reports in 2018 on "Statin Medications And The Risk Of Gynecomastia" have suggested an increased risk of gynecomastia with statins, a class of drugs often prescribed to help reduce cholesterol levels in the blood. Medications in the form of proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs) and amoxicillin, commonly used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections, have also been shown to cause gynecomastia in users.

Dr Ivan Puah strongly advises to "always ask your doctor in detail on all the possible side effects before committing to long-term medication. While certain medications keep current health conditions in control, certain medications may contribute to possible physical alterations and even detrimental side effects. When in doubt, always seek a second opinion."

Dr Ivan Puah Designs Tailored Surgical Technique To Address Male Breast Deformity

Dr Ivan Puah developed the 360 degrees Glandular Tissue Dissection (360 degrees GTD®) technique. In this technique, an endoscopic-line incision, no bigger than 4mm, is first created to allow infiltration of anaesthetic fluid on the area to be treated. Through this incision, a 360 degrees GTD® is then performed carefully following the physiological disposition of the glandular tissues. This gynecomastia surgical technique effectively reduces the invasive factor of the procedure, allowing a more desired cosmetic outcome.

How To Choose A Gynecomastia Surgery Doctor In Singapore

Gynecomastia surgery significantly addresses the issue of enlarged male breasts, but it is advisable to not be too hasty in seeking help. News of botched surgeries, including cosmetics, are plentiful and serve as reminders to keep a steady head, notably during adversity.  Here are a  few things to keep in mind when looking for a gynecomastia doctor in Singapore:

Experience of  a gynecomastia surgery doctor

Find out what portion of the doctor's practise involves the treatment of male breasts enlargement. Ask the doctor how frequently he performs this procedure -- is it weekly or just a handful of times a year, as that will determine the procedure results.

  • It is crucial to find a doctor who performs the procedure regularly and one who can consistently achieve a high satisfaction rate and great results.

  • Before and After photos are a good indication of the gynecomastia success rate performed by the doctor as it is often a direct reflection of their experience with the procedure.

Assessment & Communication Skills

  • The doctor should display confidence during the consultation and give a clear and concise explanation of gynecomastia, show before and after photos of cases that he has performed and answer any concerns.

  • After assessing your clinical condition and medical history, the doctor should give you a simple, uncomplicated explanation as to how and why he is recommending a particular surgical approach for the patient's body type. Does the approach address your concerns, for example, loose skin, crease beneath the breast, puffy nipples or diffuse enlargement?

  • Another important pointer to find out the gynecomastia success rate of the doctor is to read up reviews of patients who had their procedures done at the practice. That would indicate the results achieved and many aspects of the practice that play an essential role in how your gynecomastia experience will turn out to be.

In the past, men who suffered from gynecomastia may have had to live with the condition forever. Today, the path to a remedy is just a matter of a click or two away (on the internet).

Still, the onus is on the individual to do their due research and engage a qualified and experienced doctor.
