Neurologists find link between cholesterol levels and Alzheimer’s disease risk
A team of neurologists at the University California (UC) Davis have found that lowering “bad” cholesterol levels can reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
Researchers found that higher levels of “bad” cholesterol and lower levels of “good” cholesterol in 70-year-old patients were a direct cause of amyloid plaques in the brain, which are known to contribute to Alzheimer’s Disease. Amyloid generally are protein fragments that the body produces. Beta amyloid is a protein fragment snipped from an amyloid precursor protein (APP). In a healthy brain, these protein fragments are broken down and eliminated. In Alzheimer’s disease, the fragments accumulate to form hard, insoluble plaques.
The co-author Charles DeCarli, suggests us to keep our HDL, or “good” cholesterol levels high and LDL “bad” levels low. Having a more balanced diet will help; but exercising more and avoiding drinking alcohol and smoking can make a big difference, too. Additionally, taking nutritional supplements like artichoke extract and Omega-3 can help restore balance.
