No Blades, Just Breakthroughs: Elevating Patient Outcomes with Precision Technology

December 09, 2024

Discover how Gleneagles Hospital Kuala Lumpur (GKL) elevates patient outcomes with Gamma Knife Icon radiosurgery, a revolutionary, non-invasive precision technology for brain tumours, neurological disorders, and cancer care.

No Blades, Just Breakthroughs: Elevating Patient Outcomes with Precision Technology

The healthcare industry has seen many technology breakthroughs over the years to improve patient hospital experiences and outcomes. Being at the forefront of the Malaysian healthcare industry has been an objective since Gleneagles Hospital Kuala Lumpur’s (GKL) founding years, and this has led the hospital to adopt one of the latest surgical technologies in the market. A testament to this commitment is the implementation of Gamma Knife (GK) radiosurgery or stereotactic radiosurgery, a revolutionary treatment that has been available at GKL since 2014.

Gamma Knife is commonly used to treat metastases which are tumours that have spread from other parts of the body to the brain. This method is also effective in the treatment of vascular lesions such as arterio-venous malformations and cavernomas.

Additionally, Gamma Knife can be used to treat pain as in trigeminal neuralgia and glossopharyngeal neuralgia, and movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy and obsessive-compulsive disorders.

With more than 800 successful treatments performed, Gamma Knife radiosurgery has catered to a diverse patient demographic, with individuals as young as seven and as seasoned as 90 years old. This remarkable range underscores the adaptability and effectiveness of the technology in treating various conditions, particularly those related to brain tumours and neurological disorders.

In 2020, GKL upgraded its Gamma Knife system from the Perfexion model to the state-of-the-art Icon. The enhancement introduced an evolution in patient experience, allowing eligible patients the option of a custom face mask as opposed to the headframe. This shift not only contributes to patient comfort but also emphasies the non-invasive nature of the procedure. Equipped with remarkable precision capabilities, the Icon can now deliver targeted radiation treatments within an accuracy of just 0.15mm, further optimising outcomes.

Gamma Knife Icon stands as a gold standard in stereotactic radiosurgery worldwide, employing 192 precise beams of radiation directed at targeted areas. This level of accuracy has solidified its status as the preferred treatment method among experts.

As part of its ongoing mission to enhance cancer care accessibility, GKL currently collaborates with IHH Healthcare Malaysia in offering free cancer treatment programmes through the Gamma Knife technology. In 2024, GKL provided up to 21 cases under this initiative, benefitting 500 patients referred from government hospitals. This effort reflects GKL's dedication not only to advancing technology but also to ensuring that cutting-edge treatments are accessible to everyone, particularly those in underprivileged circumstances.

GKL’s adoption of Gamma Knife Radiosurgery exemplifies how the infusion of precision technology can lead to transformative patient outcomes and GKL remains committed to redefining the standards of healthcare in Malaysia, ensuring that no one is left behind in the pursuit of improved health outcomes.
