OBESITY!!

Obesity which is a public health concern since 1975, is defined by the World Health Organisation as ‘abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that presents a risk to health’. People living with obesity are at a greater risk of suffering from chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension and certain cancers. Obesity is also a risk factor for complications of Covid-19.

In many countries, people living with obesity are regularly blamed for their disease. Weight stigma reinforces assumptions that obesity is merely a person’s individual responsibility. People with obesity are constantly shamed and blamed because many - including doctors, policymakers, and others - do not fully understand the root causes of obesity, which are often a complex mixture of dietary, lifestyle, genetic, psychological, sociocultural, economic and environmental factors. It can damage mental and physical wellbeing and may prevent people from seeking necessary medical care.

It is time we break the cycle of shame and blame and re-evaluate our approach for addressing this complex global public health problem. Addressing this issue, the ‘World Obesity Day’ is a global event, held annually on March 4th to bring people together to raise awareness and increase knowledge about obesity and the many other diseases which it impacts. The global theme for this year’s campaign by the World Obesity Federation is “Every BODY Needs Everybody”
