OncoCare Cancer Centre Expands From Singapore To Malaysia

Selangor, 27 November 2024 – OncoCare Cancer Centre (OncoCare), one of Singapore’s leading private oncology providers, is excited to announce the opening of its first international facility at Thomson Hospital, Kota Damansara. This expansion is an important step in OncoCare’s mission to bring top-quality cancer care accessible to patients across Southeast Asia.

Since its founding in 2007 by Dr Tay Miah Hiang and Dr Peter Ang, OncoCare has grown into a trusted name in oncology, with seven clinics in Singapore serving more than 36,000 patient visits annually. The centre is known for its multidisciplinary approach, offering innovative treatments such as precision oncology, immunotherapy, and targeted therapy, alongside compassionate support.

“We established OncoCare with the vision of providing comprehensive, patient-centred cancer care. Expanding into Malaysia is a proud moment for us, as it allows us to bring this same standard of quality care to a broader community. Partnering with Thomson Hospital provides a strong platform to offer innovative treatments and holistic support, ensuring Malaysian patients receive the best possible outcomes,” shared Dr Tay Miah Hiang, Founder of OncoCare Cancer Centre Singapore.

Cancer is the fourth leading cause of death in Malaysia, increasing from 10.5 per cent in 2021 to 12.6 per cent in 2022, according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) 2023 report. OncoCare Malaysia aims to bridge the gap by offering cutting-edge treatments and comprehensive screening programmes especially for breast, colorectal, and lung cancers, which are among the most prevalent in the country.

“Today’s soft launch marks a significant milestone as OncoCare brings its expertise to Malaysia. Our mission is to make top-quality cancer care more accessible, integrating innovative treatments with compassionate, multidisciplinary care to ensure the best possible outcomes for Malaysian patients. This is just the beginning, and we look forward to shaping the future of oncology care in the region,” shared Dr John Low Seng Hooi, Chief Executive Officer of OncoCare Cancer Centre Malaysia.

OncoCare is committed to leveraging advanced medical technology, including next generation molecular diagnostics and AI-driven radiotherapy treatment planning, to enhance treatment accuracy and reduce recovery times. These innovations, combined with personalised care plans, aim to improve patient outcomes significantly.

In addition, the centre emphasises global knowledge exchange and standardisation of care. Regular tumour board meetings bring specialists together to discuss complex cases, review diagnostic data, and explore the best treatment options. This collaborative approach ensures that each patient receives the most effective care based on the latest medical evidence.

During the soft launch, a panel session titled ‘Advancing Cancer Care: Multidisciplinary Collaboration and Innovative Treatments’ was held, featuring OncoCare Malaysia’s leading oncology specialists. The discussion emphasised how collaborations across specialties and the integration of innovative treatments are key to delivering more effective and comprehensive care for cancer patients.

Dr Matin Mellor bin Abdullah, Consultant Clinical Oncologist with over 20 years of experience in treating patients across a wide range of cancer types, shared “Personalised treatment planning, and post-treatment care provide patients and their families with the support they need throughout their cancer journey. With personalised treatment planning, and post-treatment care, we are able to ensure the best possible outcomes while also prioritising quality of life.”

Dr Nur Adila Mokhtar, Consultant Clinical Oncologist specialising in breast cancer, emphasised,

“Early detection through screening can make a significant difference in treatment success. By catching breast cancer early, we can offer patients more effective and less invasive treatment options.”

Dr Yugarajah Asokumaran, Consultant Medical Oncologist with expertise in lung cancer, added, “By integrating advanced therapies and fostering close collaboration among specialists, we aim to enhance survival rates and quality of life for lung cancer patients.”

Dr Ben Yap Beng Khiong, Senior Consultant Clinical Oncologist, highlighted the importance of clinical trials. “Clinical trials open doors to new possibilities, offering hope to patients who may have exhausted other options. They allow us to continuously explore new treatment avenues and improve patient outcomes.”

OncoCare Malaysia is more than just a treatment centre; it is a sanctuary for patients and their families. The centre provides a range of support services, including psychological counselling, pain management, and palliative care. These services ensure that every patient receives the emotional and practical support they need to navigate their cancer journey with dignity and strength.

The new centre is currently undergoing remodelling to enhance the patient journey and experience, all while remaining fully operational. Once completed, OncoCare Malaysia will feature the latest medical technologies, and a welcoming environment designed to support patients at every stage of their journey.
