Penang Adventist Hospital celebrates 100 years of compassionate healthcare, marking its legacy with a special event attended by key leaders, including the Penang Chief Minister and Seventh-day Adventist Church representatives.
12th December 2024, Georgetown – Penang Adventist Hospital marked its 100th anniversary with a grand dinner event at G Hotel, Gurney. The celebration honoured a century of service and unveiled ambitious plans for the future. The event saw attendance from the Yang AmatBerhormat Chow Kon Yeow, Penang Chief Minister, Penang State EXCO members, state representatives, dignitaries of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, family members of the hospital’s former administration, doctors, partners, and staff to commemorate the hospital’s remarkable legacy.
During the opening speech, Mr. Albin Phua, Chief Executive Officer of Penang Adventist Hospital, reflected on the institution’s humble beginnings. “In that pivotal moment on 12thDecember 1924, when our doors first opened, Dr. Gardner's vision transcended the mere establishment of a healthcare facility. The words ‘Poor Treated Free’ that adorned our first clinic's signboard were more than a declaration—they were a promise that has shaped the very essence of our institution for a century. This enduring commitment to accessible healthcare continues to illuminate our path, guided by the timeless truth that ‘God Heals, We Help’.”
Yang Amat Berhormat Chow Kon Yeow, Penang Chief Minister, congratulated the hospital on its achievements and contributions. “Your recent consecutive Global Health Asia-Pacific Healthcare and Hospital Awards, along with being named one of the Best Specialized Hospitals in Asia Pacific 2024 for Orthopaedics by Newsweek, are a testament to your world-class standards. These international accolades, alongside your consistent track record of excellence, have played a crucial role in establishing Penang as a premier destination for medical tourism in Southeast Asia.”
He reaffirmed the state’s commitment to supporting the hospital’s mission. “As we celebrate this historic milestone, the Penang State Government reaffirms its support for your mission and vision. We look forward to continuing our partnership as we work together towards an even healthier and more prosperous Penang.”
In the closing remarks, Pastor Abel Bana, Board Chairman & President of the Malaysia Union Mission (MAUM) of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, spoke with heartfelt conviction, reflecting on Penang Adventist Hospital’s century-long journey “As we celebrate this milestone, we also prepare for what lies ahead. The work is not yet finished; the mission is not complete. The challenges of tomorrow will require us to be even more innovative, compassionate, and committed. As we look ahead, let us remember that our mission is not just to provide care but to transform lives, to bring light into moments of darkness, and to inspire hope where it is most needed. This is the heart of who we are, and it is the call we will continue to answer with courage and grace.”
Penang Adventist Hospital extends its deepest gratitude to everyone who has contributed to its journey. From government officials and corporate partners to donors, medical professionals, and the community at large, their unwavering support has been instrumental in the hospital’s success.
Penang Adventist Hospital was founded by Dr. J. Earl Gardner, who opened the first Seventh-day Adventist clinic in Malaysia at 108 Muntri Street, Penang, on 12th December 1924. Its growing reputation led to the construction of a hospital at 465 Burmah Road in 1929, completed in 1931. By early 1932, the hospital saw its first patient. Today, Penang Adventist Hospital stands strong and proud, ready to serve the next century with compassion, excellence, and faith.
