Dr Andrew Dutton looks at the most common ways individuals sustain knee injuries
It’s a little bit similar to the hip, Dr Dutton says. “In the elderly, slipping and falling, and sometimes they may be a little bit overenthusiastic with their exercise regiment they are doing so that's relatively common in the elderly.”
In the young, the most common cause is sports, so Aussie Rules football, basketball, rugby, and even golf is relatively common. In general, you can either have an indirect injury, such as you twist your knee or you trip and you fall, or a direct injury. Say in rugby or in football, someone - your opponent - tackles you and that causes an abnormal force to be placed upon the knee and that then causes a direct injury.
