Dr Andrew Dutton discusses some of the therapeutic options for treating hip pain

In terms of rehabilitation, nowadays we look a lot more into core strengthening and pelvic stabilization with rehabilitation, Dr Dutton says. “That's improved a lot of patients especially those that may have mild hip problems. Most of my patients do make a good recovery after two or three months of rehabilitation.”

Hip injections usually don't do so well because of the general anatomy of the hip. Medications mainly involve anti-inflammatories and then the next step is usually arthroscopic or keyhole surgery. That's relatively new for the hip and not many people do it because the hip joint itself is deep within the body so you need very specialised equipment to be able to perform that sort of surgery. These days we're doing a lot more of that [type of surgery], especially with a lot of the ligament tears around the hip and patients have had good results so far.

In more elderly patients, treatment may involve some sort of hip replacement surgery. We are moving into robotic type surgery for that and that's a fairly exciting field that we're currently looking into.

Dr Andrew Quoc Dutton is a USA fellowship-trained consultant orthopaedic surgeon with subspecialty interests in keyhole and sports surgery, knee and hip replacements, cartilage regeneration and stem cell therapeutics in orthopaedics.
