Childhood fitness linked to improved performance in the classroom

Move more for better grades

Once we are finally able to pry our children away from their iPad or computer games, we know how much they enjoy outdoor physical activity. Now, a growing body of evidence suggests that exercise is not only beneficial for the body and mind; it can also be positively correlated to brain health and improved academic performance.

The study, conducted by the Autonomous University of Madrid and published in the Journal of Pediatrics, focused on a sample size of 2,038 Spanish children and adolescents ranging between 6 and 18 years, examined how different aspects of physical fitness such as cardiorespiratory capacity, muscular strength, and motor ability impact academic performance.

Researchers found that high levels of cardiorespiratory capacity and motor ability could be positively correlated to academic performance, both individually and in combination. However, motor ability made more of an impact on academic performance, suggesting a greater level of functionality. Muscular strength had no independent bearing on academic performance.

"Having high levels of cardiorespiratory and motor fitness may, to some extent, reduce the risk of school failure," said study author Irene Esteban-Cornejo.

This adds to past research conducted by the University of Michigan, which has shown that physically fit middle school children score the highest on standardized tests and are academically brighter.
