Telemedicine app begins trial at NHS clinic
The application will allow patients to do video consultation with doctors and pay by using its own cryptocurrency
A cryptocurrency startup that received $24 million in funding through an initial coin offering has launched a pilot programme in Britain that aims to demonstrate the effectiveness of blockchain technology in healthcare.
Medicalchain recently revealed its first application, MyClinic.com, a cross-border telemedicine platform that will enable patients to complete video consultations with their doctor, and pay using its own cryptocurrency.
Trials of the app began with patients and GPs at a large public clinic in southern England last month, and it is hoped it will be launched to the general public later this year, said Dr Abdullah Albeyatti, co-founder and chief executive of Medicalchain.
MyClinic.com is a telemedicine application that uses Medicalchain’s blockchain technology to connect patients with their doctor through a convenient and secure video consultation platform.
“It exists to build better relationships between doctors and their patients, especially when access to healthcare is difficult. At the same time MyClinic.com will give patients the power to choose the best doctors to consult with, anywhere in the world,” Medicalchain said in a statement.
“We are working together with patients, health professionals and technology specialists to ensure that MyClinic.com will seamlessly integrate into current healthcare services, and provide patients with a better experience of healthcare,” said Mo Tayeb, the company’s co-founder and chief operating officer.
Phase one of the pilot programme will focus on improving patients' access to remote services and cutting down administration time for both physicians and admin staff. Following this, the clinic will provide feedback to help Medicalchain refine and develop MyClinic.com. The next version will integrate a range of blockchain-secured services that can be accessed by patients remotely and securely.
In addition to the telemedicine application pilot programme with The Groves in Surrey, Medicalchain is working with Mayo Clinic in America and Britain’s National Health Service.
