Dr Andrew Dutton looks at the factors that contribute to hip pain
For hip pain, in general, it is often a problem with the joint cartilage, Dr Dutton says. “The cartilage is the smooth covering of the ends of the bone, so if you have damage to that cartilage it will cause friction and then pain and swelling.”
Other causes of hip pain would be the surrounding ligaments around the joint can be torn, what we call the hip labrum, and that can cause pain as well. The third one would be there's a lot of muscles surrounding the hip and a lot of these muscles can either be pulled or they can be torn and that can cause pain around the hip joint as well.
