Oncoplastic Breast Surgery

Dr. Melissa Tan Ley Hui


Dr Melissa Tan is a fully accredited United Kingdom trained Surgeon. She was a Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon in the City Hospital Birmingham, Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust, UK since 2018, prior to returning to Malaysia. In addition to being a consultant, she had other leadership roles. With her surgical expertise and her leadership role as the Clinical Governance Lead, her breast surgery team won the trust’s Quality of Care Award in 2021.

Dr Tan graduated with MBChB in 2003 from the University of Birmingham. She was awarded with MRCS, membership with the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh in 2007. She completed a period of training within a UK General Surgery training programme that culminated in the award of the FRCS, Fellowship in the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2014. She was later awarded a prestigious UK national Training Interface Group Oncoplastic Breast Surgery Fellowship at the Royal Marsden Hospital, Chelsea, London in 2016/2017. She achieved the UK General Medical Council Certificate in Completion of Training (CCT) in 2018. Just prior to taking up her consultant post, she did a visiting fellowship at the Nottingham Breast Institute and a second fellowship at the City Hospital Birmingham.

Dr Tan has published in multiple peer-reviewed journals including high impact factor journals like the Lancet Oncology; and published book chapters. She has also presented widely at conferences as well as being an invited reviewer for various journals.   

She is a keen trainer and holds a Masters in Surgical Education from the Imperial College London. She was an Education and Training Lead in her department and trained surgeons from all over the world in oncoplastic breast surgical techniques within UK recognised training programmes. She was also an examiner for the MS Oncoplastic Breast Surgery Course run by the University of East Anglia, UK.  

Her special interests include day case breast surgery, chest wall perforator flap reconstruction and mammoplasty. She practices individualised patient care and works in partnership with her patients throughout their surgical treatment journey.

Outside work, she enjoys spending time with family and friends. She and her husband, who is also a surgeon, have a daughter. They enjoy travelling, swimming, and playing tennis together. She is an advanced PADI scuba diver and would love to scuba dive more. She has climbed the highest mountain in South East Asia, Mount Kinabalu in Borneo, where she was born.
