Revolutionising Brain and Spine Surgery: Prince Court Medical Centre Introduces O-Arm Imaging & Navigation System, Elevating Precision and Patient Outcomes.
The intricate nature of the brain and spine makes surgeries complex and demanding, requiring advanced surgical skills and cutting-edge technology for improved surgical outcomes.
With the arrival of the O-Arm Imaging & Navigation System at Prince Court Medical Centre, spine and neuro surgeons are now empowered with intraoperative 2D/3D imaging when performing minimally invasive spine and brain procedures.
The state-of-art equipment delivers 3D visuals and patients’ anatomy during spine and brain operations, improving the chances of a successful procedure without the need for re-operation.
When used with the surgical navigation system, surgeons can view in real-time the location of surgical instruments relative to the patient’s anatomy. They can then confirm accurate placement of hardware prior to the completion of the surgery.
One such case has already taken place at Prince Court, where Dr. Deepak Singh, Consultant Orthopaedic & Spine Surgeon, and Dato’ Dr. Jagdeep Nanra, Consultant Neurosurgeon, successfully performed a minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (MIS-TLIF) surgery on a patient battling six years of nerve pain in his left leg.
Dr. Deepak said patients seeking spine or brain surgery will benefit from the cutting-edge technology.
“At Prince Court, this technology empowers us with enhanced precision. We no longer need to approximate the entry point and trajectory of implanted screws, improving surgical outcomes and reducing additional X-ray exposure during surgery,” he explained.
Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon (Spine), Dr. Ng Bing Wui, elaborates on the intricacies of spine surgery and how the O-Arm Imaging & Navigation System can have a transformative impact on surgeries.
“Placement of implants is extremely challenging in spine surgery. It is due to the proximity of spine implants with spinal structures. Accuracy in placing spine implant is important, a misplacement of this implant can have dire consequences.
“With the addition of this technology, it will definitely benefit patients with the safety profile provided by the O-Arm Imaging & Navigation System,” said Dr. Ng.
Prince Court is currently the only medical centre in Peninsular Malaysia to be equipped with this state-of-the-art technology which can be used in adults and children. It will benefit patients with more challenging anatomies as surgeons will have immediate imaging and information about the unique anatomy.
